ChatGPT prompts for coding

ChatGPT writes better code when the prompt includes the failure. Paste the error, the function, the input, and the result you expected. Then ask for the cause before a rewrite.

What to put in a coding prompt

A line like “my code is broken” gives ChatGPT nothing to check. A useful prompt names the language, pastes the function or the error text, shows the input you passed, and says what you expected instead. Ask for the most likely cause in plain language, then the smallest change, then one way to verify it.

If a file, a dependency, or the expected result is missing, tell ChatGPT to ask for it. A patch that invents a helper you do not have is harder to review than a short question.

  • Language and version, such as Python 3 or the browser API you are actually using
  • The error text or the failing assertion, copied rather than paraphrased
  • The input, the result you got, and the result you expected
  • A limit: smallest change, do not rewrite the file, do not delete the test

Debugging is a different job from writing a script

When you want a new script, say what it must not do. A rename script should print the plan before it touches files, and it should not delete anything. When you want a bug fixed, say whether the test or the implementation is allowed to change. “Make the test pass” often deletes the assertion.

The three comparisons below were written ahead of time. They are illustrations of a clearer coding prompt, not a live Quick Check and not a diagnosis of your repository. PromptShield does not see your files unless you paste them into the prompt.

Review the prompt in ChatGPT

PromptShield’s Chrome extension runs Quick Check beside the ChatGPT composer. You read the improved prompt and use it only if it still describes your bug. PromptShield does not run your code, and it does not press send.

The free plan includes 3 successful optimizations per local day. No credit card is required. You can also try a prompt in the browser before you install the extension.

Before and after

A written comparison, not a live optimization. The improved version is one paragraph you could send.

Illustrative example, written ahead of time

Debugging: A TypeError

Original

fix this TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'map')

Improved

Help me fix a TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'map'). I will paste the function, the value I passed in, and the line that threw. First say which value is undefined and why map ran on it. Then suggest the smallest change that handles a missing list without hiding a real bug, and give one test with an empty list and one with a normal list. Do not rewrite the whole file, and do not invent fields that are not in the snippet. If the input shape is missing, ask for it before you propose a patch.

Why this is better

  • Pastes the error instead of saying the code is broken.
  • Asks which value is undefined before anyone rewrites the file.
  • Requires a missing-list test and a normal-list test, so the fix cannot hide the bug.

Illustrative example, written ahead of time

Debugging: A failing test

Original

this unit test fails, just make it pass

Improved

Help me with a unit test that fails. I will paste the test, the code it calls, and the assertion message, including the expected value and the actual value. First say whether the test or the code looks wrong, and why. If the code is wrong, suggest the smallest change and leave the assertion in place. If the test is wrong, say what behavior it should check instead of deleting it to make the suite green. Do not invent functions that are not in the paste. If either side is missing, ask for it before you propose a change.

Why this is better

  • Treats “make it pass” as a question about the test and the code.
  • Keeps the assertion when the implementation is the part that is wrong.
  • Stops the model from inventing functions that were not pasted.

Illustrative example, written ahead of time

Coding: Implementation

Original

write a python script to rename files

Improved

Write a Python 3 script that renames the files in one folder. Include a dry-run mode that prints every planned change before any file is touched, and do not delete files. Make the new-name pattern easy to edit, and show how to run both the dry run and the real run. Say what should happen with extensions, spaces, and names that would collide. If a safe result depends on a naming scheme I have not given, use a clearly marked placeholder instead of inventing one.

Why this is better

  • Names the language and the safety rule: show the plan before renaming.
  • Covers collisions and extensions, which are where rename scripts fail.
  • Uses a placeholder instead of inventing a folder or a trip name.

Prompt checklist

A useful check before you send. It is not a scientific requirement, and a short prompt can still be enough when the chat already has the missing pieces.

Want PromptShield inside the chat?

PromptShield works in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and four other AI chats. You review the improved prompt before you use it. The free plan includes 3 successful optimizations a day, and no credit card is required.

PromptShield installs in Chrome on a computer. It is not a mobile extension. Copy the install link and open it later in desktop Chrome.

Questions

No. A clearer prompt gives ChatGPT the error, the input, and the expected result. You still read the suggestion and run the test.

No. They were written ahead of time to show the kind of improvement PromptShield is designed to make. A real Quick Check is written for the draft you submit, so it will not repeat these words.

Quick Check sends the prompt to PromptShield over HTTPS so it can return feedback and an improved version. PromptShield does not send that prompt to the AI chat for you. You review the result and decide whether to use it. Optional conversation context stays off until you turn it on.

PromptShield is a Chrome extension for desktop Chrome. It works inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, and Meta AI’s web chat. It is not a mobile app, and Meta AI support is not a Facebook or Instagram integration.
