How to write better AI prompts

Better prompts are more specific about the job. You do not need a secret format. You need to notice what you left for the model to guess.

Start from the answer you need

Before you write the prompt, finish this sentence: “I will use the reply to ____.” Studying, sending an email, and choosing a desk are different uses. The prompt should say which one.

Then add only the context that changes the answer: your level, the audience, the deadline, the text you want rewritten, or the error you hit. Extra background that does not change the decision can wait.

A simple structure you can reuse

One useful way to check a prompt is to look for four parts: goal, context, constraints, and desired output. This is a writing aid, not a rule that every good prompt must follow. A two-line prompt can be enough when the chat already has the rest.

Constraints are the part people skip. “Do not invent numbers,” “wait for my answer,” and “keep it under 150 words” prevent a polished answer that you cannot use.

Review it before you send

Read the prompt once as if you had no other context. If a classmate could not tell what you want, the model is guessing too. PromptShield’s Chrome extension does that review inside the chat: Quick Check, then your choice.

Before and after

A written comparison, not a live optimization. Use it to see what specificity changes.

Rough prompt

Clearer prompt

Summarize the notes I paste for someone who missed the meeting. Keep decisions and owners. Five bullets, then open questions.

Say who will read the summary.

Prompt checklist

A useful check before you send. It is not a scientific requirement, and a short prompt can still be enough when the chat already has the missing pieces.

Want PromptShield inside the chat?

PromptShield works in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and four other AI chats. You review the improved prompt before you use it. The free plan includes 3 successful optimizations a day, and no credit card is required.

PromptShield installs in Chrome on a computer. It is not a mobile extension. Copy the install link and open it later in desktop Chrome.

Questions

No. A long prompt full of roles and slogans can hide the actual task. Add the detail that changes the answer, then stop.

Quick Check sends the prompt to PromptShield over HTTPS so it can return feedback and an improved version. PromptShield does not send that prompt to the AI chat for you. You review the result and decide whether to use it. Optional conversation context stays off until you turn it on.
