Beginner guide
Prompt engineering for beginners
Prompt engineering sounds like a specialty. For everyday chats it is just clear instructions. You are telling a capable assistant what finished work looks like.
You are writing a brief
If you asked a person for help, you would say what you are trying to do and what you already know. Do the same here. “Explain inflation” is a topic. “Explain inflation to a high-school student, with one household example and no policy lecture” is a brief.
You can ignore most prompt jargon. Role labels, special tokens, and giant templates are optional. Use them only when they change the answer you need.
A first checklist
Look for a goal, the context that matters, one or two constraints, and the output shape. Missing context is normal. You can tell the model to ask one question instead of guessing.
After the reply, correct one thing at a time: “shorter,” “keep the example,” “do not add a conclusion.” Small follow-ups work better than restarting with a new pile of instructions.
Practice in the chat you use
Read a few examples on this site, then try the same shape on your own task. When you want the check to happen inside ChatGPT or another supported chat, add PromptShield to Chrome on a computer. The free plan does not need a credit card.
Before and after
A written comparison, not a live optimization. Use it to see what specificity changes.
Rough prompt
which is better chatgpt or claude
Clearer prompt
Help me choose where to draft a two-page client proposal this week. Compare ChatGPT and Claude only for that job.
Beginners get a usable answer by naming the job, not by asking for a universal winner.
Prompt checklist
A useful check before you send. It is not a scientific requirement, and a short prompt can still be enough when the chat already has the missing pieces.
Want PromptShield inside the chat?
PromptShield works in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and four other AI chats. You review the improved prompt before you use it. The free plan includes 3 successful optimizations a day, and no credit card is required.
PromptShield installs in Chrome on a computer. It is not a mobile extension. Copy the install link and open it later in desktop Chrome.

No. Ordinary sentences are enough if they include the task and the limits. A formal template is useful only when you repeat the same kind of job.
PromptShield is a Chrome extension for desktop Chrome. It works inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, and Meta AI’s web chat. It is not a mobile app, and Meta AI support is not a Facebook or Instagram integration.
